The term \u201crave\u201d originated in Britain in the 1950s to describe a \u201cwild bohemian party\u201d which evolved in the 1980s in Manchester into rave culture and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) as we know it today. Raves were a safe place for people to escape from their everyday realities without discrimination towards race, sexual orientation, gender, or class. Today the international popularity of these dance scenes along with the celebrity status of DJs continue to create a ritualistic experience through music and dance to draw a broader audience from all walks of life.<\/p>\n
My particular interest in this subculture comes from an outsider\u2019s perspective working as a photographer at such events, which has allowed me to engage with and document raves. These portraits are expressions of the energy that transpires when large groups of people come together in one place. This creates a unique community where complete strangers experience repetitive dance movements syncing with pulsating music and a genuine enthusiasm for this trans-like environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
