Through encaustic and sculptural works, this exhibition confronts the urgency of housing affordability within our communities and the anxieties that lay within finding a place to exist.

Allie Risley is a BFA alumni (2021) in the School of Creative Arts (SoCA) at the University of the Fraser Valley. Risley looks at this subject through a lens of emotional memory, finding connection with colour and textures that are felt and seen throughout the Fraser Valley. These works encourage viewers to feel both the physical and emotional changes that are present when we struggle to live within the expectations of an ever changing and demanding societal landscape, shaped by the pressures to keep up with the housing market and rapid development of the Fraser Valley.

Encaustics have been a part of Risley’s medium for many years; the use of bee’s wax allows the flow state of paint to become solid within its own fluid movement, demonstrating a preservation of time and memory within it. The wax behaves much like a memory, solidifying a moment in time that will never exist quite the same, but preserved, nonetheless. Seeing the natural landscape and areas of development, alongside the mass gentrification of areas can leave us feeling like a piece is lost – but we never really forget how things look before they change. How are we expected to live? How can we afford it?

The exhibition opens on February 4th at the S’eliyemetaxwtexw Art Gallery, located on the UFV Abbotsford Campus, and runs through until February 27th.

A closing reception will be held on Tuesday, February 24, from 3:00-4:00 pm in the gallery.
