Adam Nelson – Directed Studies Performance

August 6–7, 2024

On August 6th and 7th, Adam Nelson presented an untitled piece, a durational performance, created as part of the Directed Studies Course. Under the guidance of Parjad Sharifi, Adam created a raw and vulnerable piece that invited visitors to face themes of addiction and loss. Ushered into the gallery by a doorman wearing a neutral face mask, the gallery was set in dim light, with only the projector and some electric candle light guiding the visitors through the space. Adam lied still, wearing a white face mask himself, and zipped in up a bodybag lying on the floor of the gallery. On the wall, he presented items directly related to his openly discussed history of addiction. Viewers were invited to read about what each item meant to Adam personally.
