Throughout the history of art, the human body and landscapes have been popular subject matter that reflect their contemporary moment. In this exhibition bodies and land are brought together as repositories of knowledge–shifting and challenging perceptions of knowledge keeping.
Each work draws from the knowledge held within the bodies of both humans and land, recognizing the interactions between human and non-humans’ bodies as sites of creation and social impact. Through the lens of performance, these interactions blur the classifications of “land” and “body” highlighting their interconnections in contemporary life.
Just as each featured artist brings a unique perspective to the interconnection of land and bodies through their personal, social, cultural, and political perspectives, they also approach the notion of performance differently. Using both action and interaction the presented works play with performance using traditional and non-traditional methods. Installation, video, and digital media art are used by these artists to document performances, performativity, embodied actions, and performance-based research.
The juxtaposition of action and interaction in these works challenges the lines between performer and viewer highlighting the interconnected dynamics of performer/viewer and that of land/body.
This exhibition features artist who are current UFV Students, UFV Alumni, Faculty, and artists from our surrounding communities. The exhibition continues in Building C featuring video and digital media works.
