2021 VA Major Show: From Where I Make

Passage explores the inescapable questions of life: who we are, who we used to be, and who we will become, by combining found objects and plants as signifiers for memory, emotion, the body and time. I stumbled across these suitcases while sorting through a loved ones’ home after they passed away. The suitcases were full of belongings and memories, a time capsule of someone’s life. It was comforting to imagine the history behind each object but there was an overwhelming reminder of the absence of life. This experience made me reflect on and question my own life. I am at a significant crossroads in discovering who I am and who I want to be. I carry around a weight that makes me feel as if I’m longing for something and the only place where this pressure lifts is when I am surrounded by plants and nature. Passage creates a space to evoke memories of the past and reflect on the path ahead.

I would like to acknowledge that I live and work on the shared, unceded ancestral territories of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Sumas and Matsqui peoples. I am grateful for being able to live and work on this land.
